What is an Inactive Account?

If there are no customer-induced transactions in the account for a period of over one year, the account is tagged as “Inactive”.

What is a Dormant/Inoperative Account?

As per RBI guidelines, if there are no customer-induced transactions in the account for a period of over two years, the account is tagged as “Dormant/Inoperative”.

What is a Customer-Induced Transaction?

A customer-induced transaction refers to transactions that involve:

  1. A financial transaction initiated by or conducted at the request of the account holder, either by the bank or a third party (a detailed list is provided in Annexure I).
  2. A non-financial transaction
  3. KYC (Know Your Customer) updates, performed either in person or through digital channels such as internet banking or mobile banking applications.
What is a Financial Transaction?

Any monetary transaction in the customer’s savings or current account with the bank, whether it involves a credit or debit action.

What is a Non-Financial Transaction?

A non-financial transaction involves an inquiry or request for a product or service initiated by the account holder through any ATM, internet banking, mobile banking application, or Third-Party Application Providers, which requires two-factor authentication (2FA). Examples of such transactions include changes in transaction limits, requests for cheque books, credit/debit cards, nomination updates, balance inquiries, and more.

How to Reactivate Your Dormant or Inoperative Savings Account?

Simply submit a self-attested copy of the following KYC documents at your nearest DBS Branch:

  1. One (1) recent passport-size photograph
  2. PAN Card or Form 60
  3. One (1) of the following Official Valid Documents (OVD):
  • Aadhaar
  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Voter ID

As per RBI guidelines, there are no charges for reactivating a dormant bank account.

What happens if I don’t submit the required documents?

If you don’t submit the documents, your account will continue to be frozen. In such a scenario, you won’t be able to perform any transactions from your account or use your Debit Card for any purchases.

Annexure I: Financial Transactions

Customer-Initiated Transactions:

  1. ATM cash withdrawal/deposit
  2. RTGS / NEFT / IMPS / UPI / AePS / ABPS transactions
  3. Internet banking transactions
  4. Debit card transactions
  5. Transfer of funds from/to the linked CBDC (e-Rupee) account
  6. Cheque clearing
  7. Remittance of funds via demand drafts
  8. Cash withdrawal by a third party using a cheque
  9. Standing instructions issued by the customer
  10. NACH (National Automated Clearing House) debit/credits
  11. Term deposit interest/proceeds
  12. Dividend on shares, interest on debentures, or any other investment proceeds
  13. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) credits
  14. Refunds, including e-commerce payments and income tax returns
  15. National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) debits

Bank-Initiated Transactions:

  1. All types of charges levied by the bank, including taxes deducted
  2. Savings bank account interest
