Proving that disability is not a limitation, check out inspiring stories of three alumni of ‘DBS Bersiap’ and ‘DBS Foundation Coding Camp 2024’ | Bahasa
Equality in the world of work for people with disabilities is one of the things we all must fight for. In Indonesia, there are 38.8 million people who are considered as persons with disabilities, according to data from the 2023 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas). According to Ministry of Manpower 2024 data, there are 5.17 million people with disabilities of working age, with 1.04 million of them in employment. However, the Labor Force Participation Rate (TPAK) of people with disabilities is only 20.14 percent.
On top of that, the Open Unemployment Rate (OER) among this group is relatively high, at 10.8 percent. Hence, it is important for all parties to contribute create an inclusive work environment in line with the theme of World Disability Day 2024, namely 'Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future'.
As a purpose-driven bank and as the realisation of its third sustainability pillar, Impact Beyond Banking, Bank DBS Indonesia fosters the empowerment of people with disabilities. This is manifested in the 'DBS Bersiap' and 'Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation' programmes. 'DBS Bersiap' seeks to expand access to education for students with disabilities while 'Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation' is a scholarship programme that provides coding training to enhance the skills of the general population, including individuals with disabilities, in the information technology sector.
Dive into the inspiring stories of three alumni of 'DBS Bersiap' and 'Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation’!
1. Hani Amany Elisadi, a deaf friend with a successful career as an IT staff at Perum Peruri
Affectionately known as Hany, the deaf woman is a graduate of the ‘Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation’. Despite having limitations in communication, her enthusiasm for learning and seeking experience has never waned. Her hard work has paid off and today she works as an IT staff member at Perum Peruri.
Hany expressed appreciation for DBS Foundation's efforts to expand the reach of the Coding Camp to others with disabilities. “I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in the programme facilitated by DBS Foundation. This programme not only enriched my knowledge and skills in the Front-End field but also broadened my horisons in the world of technology. In addition, Coding Camp equipped me with skills and a mindset that motivates me to pursue my dreams by continuing to learn, innovate, and face challenges with optimism,” she said.

“I believe that we must have clear goals and work hard to achieve them, regardless of our conditions or limitations,” said the man affectionately known by the nickname Habib. He is a graduate from ‘Coding Camp 2023 powered by DBS Foundation’ with auditory sensory disability or deafness.
Habib's interest in technology began in his teens. Back then, he was fascinated by the digital world that could connect people from different parts of the world. His decision to pursue a formal education in information technology at Islamic University of Riau was a milestone in his journey. Habib was convinced that an understanding of and expertise in technology would open up many unimaginable opportunities. “My motivation or 'spark' to join the ‘Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation’ programme was driven by its inclusivity for people with disabilities like me. Like other participants, I received free intensive training from experienced mentors,” he said.
Habib also gave words of encouragement to the participants of the ‘Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation’, “All must start from a growth mindset and hope to make a positive contribution through technology. Set clear goals and stick to them. Hard work and confidence will help you get through every challenge until you finally achieve success.”
3. Alfrida Hermawati, a visually impaired person with a passion for contributing to social causes
Alfrida Hermawati is a visually impaired person with low vision. Since birth, Alfrida's vision has been limited and she can only see objects from a distance of two to three meters. “Meeting other amazing friends with disabilities makes me feel more motivated to reach even greater heights, igniting the 'spark' and passion within me. I believe that realising we all have great potential, and supporting each other, will make us stronger in achieving our dreams. Moreover, after joining the 'DBS Bersiap' programme, I feel new opportunities have opened up for me and, most importantly, my confidence has increased,” she said.
Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications at PT Bank DBS Indonesia Mona Monika said, “We are very proud to participate in supporting vulnerable groups, especially people with disabilities, in achieving their dreams. We believe that everyone has a 'spark' or spirit within them, which makes them able to face challenges, move forward, and contribute positively to themselves, those closest to them, and society. The stories of Hany, Alfrida, and Habib prove that by believing and following that spark, we can live courageously. In the future, I hope there will be more friends with disabilities who thrive and play an important role in society. Therefore, Bank DBS Indonesia and DBS Foundation are committed to creating various programmes that can support them, to ignite the 'spark', and achieve these goals.”
'DBS Bersiap' and 'Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation' aim to bridge the gap in access to education for people with disabilities and encourage an inclusive, accommodating, and accessible work environment. This year, ‘DBS Bersiap’ has successfully equipped 50 graduates with future-ready skills such as work ethics, communication skills in the professional world, and problem-solving. Meanwhile, since its launch in 2023, ‘Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation’ has reached 26,000 women, 946 people with disabilities, and more than 22,000 participants from underprivileged families. This step is a tangible manifestation of Bank DBS Indonesia's commitment to diversity, equality and inclusiveness (DEI). This activity also engages employees to contribute positively to the community as part of the volunteer programme, People of Purpose, in line with Bank DBS Indonesia's third sustainability pillar, Impact Beyond Banking, to support its vision to be the 'Best Bank for A Better World'.
