Indonesia, 18 Jan 2024 - As a purpose-driven bank, Bank DBS Indonesia is committed to supporting the sustainable development of the national capital city (IKN) Nusantara. The commitment was realised through Bank DBS Indonesia's participation in the 'Green Movement: Green Belt of the Archipelago', a joint action to plant 10,000 trees in East Kalimantan on January 17-18, 2024. Present at the launch of the movement were President Joko Widodo, Chairman of the IKN Authority Bambang Susantono, and Head of Group Strategic Marketing Communication at Bank DBS Indonesia Mona Monika.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data shows that a total of 13,758.8 hectares of forest area were deforested in East and North Kalimantan in the period 2021-2022. This is a challenge for the government's sustainable development agenda. Therefore, IKN is designed as a smart forest city with 70 percent of its area to be allocated as vegetation cover to preserve the environment.

To fulfill the vision, the IKN Nusantara Authority developed a master plan for IKN development that recommends, among other things, improving and restoring land cover in the IKN landscape. Efforts include a forest and land rehabilitation (RHL) approach by combining various native species, rare and protected endemic species, fast-growing plants, and other multipurpose tree species. In 2024, RHL activities are planned for 500 hectares of area with a total of 312,500 seedlings to be planted.

'Green Movement: Green Belt of the Nusantara', organised by Katadata Indonesia, Jejakin, and Benih Baik in collaboration with the IKN Nusantara Authority, is part of the reforestation and community empowerment activity, the monitoring of carbon uptake and its environmental impacts. For this activity, Bank DBS Indonesia contributed 700 trees consisting of several plant species, such as durian (Durio zibethinus), jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), balangeran (Elaeis guineensis), and pulai (Alstonia scholaris) trees.

"The realisation of the vision of IKN Nusantara as a smart and sustainable forest city requires the contribution of many parties, including the banking sector. The tree planting activity was part of Bank DBS Indonesia's effort to support the government in promoting sustainable development. Moreover, the activity was a manifestation of Bank DBS Indonesia's third sustainability pillar, Impact Beyond Banking, in our mission to be the 'Best Bank for a Better World'. We believe that this tree planting activity can benefit the environment and communities around IKN Nusantara and support its sustainability," said Head of Group Strategic Marketing Communication of Bank DBS Indonesia Mona Monika.

Prior to this, Bank DBS Indonesia successfully planted more than 5,000 tree seedlings of different types in several provinces such as Jakarta, West Java, East Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi. The tree planting activities were carried out in collaboration with government bodies such as the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) as well as several strategic partners such as BenihBaik.com, LindungiHutan, and the Faculty of Forestry and the Biodiversity Research Center of Hasanuddin University in Makassar.
