● Tridi Oasis helps to tackle plastic waste in Indonesia by recovering waste and recycling plastic waste
● With support from Bank DBS Indonesia, Tridi Oasis is growing and creating a positive impact the environment
Indonesia, 20 May 2022 - Indonesia is facing a grave challenge posed by plastic waste. Despite efforts to tackle the problem involving multi-stakeholders, from the government to companies and the general public, Indonesia has not been able to reduce the amount of plastic waste, which has remained relatively high. According to
The World Bank 2020 data, Indonesia produces 7.8 million tons of plastic waste per year and more than half of it, or 4.9 million tons, are not managed properly. This is due to a number of factors, including a lack of a proper waste collection before disposal to poorly managed open dumps.
To address the issue, social entrepreneur Tridi Oasis focuses on recycling waste materials into reusable materials. Tridi Oasis Founder and CEO
Dian Kurniawati said, "Indonesia is one of the 10 countries in the world that contribute the largest amount of plastic waste in the oceans according to data collected by
Condor Ferries. Although public awareness of environmental issues has increased and more and more public figures are voicing concerns about the issue, we still need to improve and increase the quality and quantity of the waste management industry to reduce the amount of plastic waste in Indonesia. Tridi Oasis supports the Indonesian government’s plan through the
National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) platform to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the marine environment by 70 percent by 2025. Tridi Oasis will also strive to support efforts to maintain balanced ecosystems and protect the environment and encourage contributions from local parties to tackle the problem.”
Established in 2016, Tridi Oasis produces a wide range of medium to high-grade PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) flakes that can be converted into sustainable textiles and packaging products that are highly sought after by various industries such as food packaging and textiles. With a mission to build and promote a circular economy in Indonesia, Tridi Oasis seeks to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly economy while providing sustainable employment for more people.
"As one of the growing plastic waste recycling companies in Indonesia, we offer more than just products that function well, but also responsible, transparent plastic waste management, and can provide traceability of plastic waste data that is processed from the original source. By focusing on developing technology and scientific innovation, Tridi Oasis is now able to produce thousands of tons of recycled plastic per year. As of 2021, Tridi Oasis has recycled 250 million plastic bottles to be sold to the recycled plastic market. In the same year, we received support from Bank DBS Indonesia in the form of business development guidance and training to generate a wider social impact, including Human Resources, Finance, Branding and Marketing Strategy. In addition, we were selected by Bank DBS Indonesia to receive a grant from DBS Foundation," said
Dian Kurniawati.
The grant from DBS Foundation enabled Tridi Oasis to hire more people to handle the company’s operations to ensure a smooth work process. Tridi Oasis was also able to further its feasibility study and market research as well as complete research and development on the recycling of multi-layer plastic packaging (MLP), a type of plastic that is least recycled but most commonly ends up in the environment. Tridi Oasis has also been able to establish partnerships with various companies in the FMCG, e-commerce, and logistics sectors. This development indicates that Tridi Oasis is getting closer to achieving its mission to contribute to efforts to build a circular economy and bring sustainable growth that meets social, environmental and economic aspects.
“As a purpose-driven bank, Bank DBS Indonesia through DBS Foundation continues to support the development of social entrepreneurs in Indonesia, including Tridi Oasis, which seeks to tackle environmental problems by creating positive impacts. Our support through various programmes, from mentoring sessions to grants, demonstrates our effort to deliver one of Bank DBS Indonesia’s sustainability pillars, namely Creating Social Impact. We are pleased to learn that our support brings real and positive impacts on Tridi Oasis’ growth,” said Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications, Bank DBS Indonesia
Mona Monika.
