Indonesia, 29 May 2023 - To commemorate National Awakening Day that falls on May 20 as well as to celebrate its eighth anniversary, Foodbank of Indonesia (FOI) held the 2nd Congress of the Indonesian Food Bank Network: Pasar Rakyat Mustikarasa, in Jakarta. The event brought together the Deputy for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KPPPA), the National Food Agency (NFA), business partners, and mothers from various regions in Indonesia. The congress endorsed the "Dapur Mustikarasa" campaign, a movement involving mothers and culinary activists from all over Indonesia to end hunger and improve family nutrition by processing surplus food and locally grown food and spices. As a purpose-driven bank, Bank DBS Indonesia supported the activity by participating in an interactive forum themed “Collaboration to Vitalise Dapur Mustikarasa” (“Gotong Royong untuk Hidupkan Dapur Mustikarasa"). The session discussed the importance of collaboration of various parties, including banking institutions, to build food security and end hunger.

Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilisation of the National Food Agency (NFA) I Gusti Ketut Iswara said, "Food waste is a problem that we must solve together because the excess food we produce has the potential to help us achieve food security. Additionally, we encourage food diversification through consumption of locally produced foods. Of course, making it happen will require a lot of effort from various parties."

Commenting on the activity, Mona Monika, Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications, PT Bank DBS Indonesia, said, "We really appreciate all of FOI's initiatives in reducing food waste and creating sustainable food solutions, including through the 2nd Congress of the Indonesian Food Bank Network: Pasar Rakyat Mustikarasa. This initiative is in line with Bank DBS Indonesia's third sustainability pillar, Creating Impact Beyond Banking, to create a broader positive impact on society. We hope that this event can further inspire many parties to work together to address food waste so that it does not end up in landfills."

In addition to discussions and educational sessions, the congress also provided an opportunity for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to introduce their products and spices at Mustikarasa traditional market. Through this exhibition, Bank DBS Indonesia and FOI provided concrete support for MSMEs and raised awareness of the importance of consuming quality local foods.

Foodbank of Indonesia CEO Hendro Utomo added, "We are grateful for Bank DBS Indonesia's support for FOI’s activities, including the 2nd Congress of the Indonesian Food Bank Network: Pasar Rakyat Mustikarasa. We hope that this collaboration can realise a just and prosperous society through sustainable food sovereignty, in line with our commitment to supporting Goal 2 of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), which is to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture, as well as Goal 12, which is related to responsible production and consumption patterns."

As it enters its eighth year, FOI, which is under the auspices of Yayasan Lumbung Pangan Indonesia, has helped more than 260,000 beneficiaries in 43 cities/districts and 230 sub-districts to prevent food waste and improve family nutrition.

Bank DBS Indonesia's partnership with FOI is part of the #MakanTanpaSisa movement that has been running since 2020. Through the movement, Bank DBS Indonesia collaborates with various parties, from MSMEs, startups, e-commerce, to the general public, to reduce food waste. The movement has successfully generated 56,596 kg in food impact.
