Indonesia, 03 Sept 2025 - Although the number of people with hearing loss in Indonesia is estimated at more than 2.5 million, access to inclusive communication is still limited. Efforts have been made to promote the Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO) and the Indonesian Sign Language System (SIBI), but there are only a few interesting and interactive learning platforms available. In fact, such platforms have great potential to increase public interest in learning sign language while encouraging more inclusive interactions.
Acknowledging the gap, a group of young talents who graduated from Coding Camp 2025 powered by DBS Foundation launched
Isyara, an interactive web platform for learning sign language in a fun, easy, and enjoyable way. Equipped with gesture recognition technology and a gamification approach, Isyara is not only designed to facilitate learning but also to popularise sign language as a universal language that everyone understands.
“Our main goal is not only to make it easier for people to learn sign language but also to make it popular and more widely understood. Sign language is a universal language that everyone should understand, not just a unique skill for the deaf community. With Isyara, we want to develop interest in learning while paving the way for inclusive communication,” Isyara Team Leader
Nauval Gymnasti explained
.
Isyara was named the best capstone project of Coding Camp 2025 powered by DBS Foundation for its success in creating an interactive, real-time web platform that allows anyone to learn sign language independently, anywhere, and anytime. The solution was developed to address the limitations of learning media that are rigid and hard to access while promoting more inclusive communication for the deaf community in Indonesia.
Isyara's Journey to Promote Inclusive Communication
The Isyara team consists of six talented individuals with a high level of motivation to continue to grow:
Nauval Gymnasti, Software Engineering Study Programme, Indonesia University of Education.
Davin Ghani Ananta Kusuma, Software Engineering Study Programme, Indonesia University of Education.
Rizka Alfadilla, Software Engineering Study Programme, Indonesia University of Education.
Dimas Rio Adisaputra, Informatics Engineering
Study Programme, Nurul Fikri Integrated Technology College.
Elisa Oktaviana, Information Management Study Programme, Jember State Polytechnic.
Zidan Dwi Permana, Software Engineering Study Programme, Indonesia University of Education.
Nevertheless, their journey in developing Isyara was not smooth sailing. The technical limitations they encountered taught the Isyara team an important principle: the best technology is simple, lightweight, and inclusive. This philosophy became the foundation for all of their development programmes, including the development of learning materials and methods.
Currently, the Isyara platform only covers alphabet materials. In the future, the Isyara team will also offer common words and sentences materials and build direct connections with the Deaf community in various regions. Isyara will also present Isyara Arena, a multiplayer feature that allows users to learn with friends while competing interactively. Moreover, this platform is open-source to encourage more parties to collaborate and accelerate the creation of more inclusive communication within society.
"Isyara is a clear example of how Indonesia's young talent can produce solutions that are not only innovative but also have a positive impact on society. Through the Coding Camp powered by DBS Foundation, we want to continue to encourage the creation of works that can inspire and bring broad benefits to support vulnerable communities and promote inclusivity in society, in line with Bank DBS Indonesia's vision as the Best Bank for a Better World," said Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications PT Bank DBS Indonesia
Mona Monika.
Coding Camp 2025 powered by DBS Foundation as a Platform for Innovation
