Bank DBS Indonesia and Pijar Foundation prepare students for “Future of Work” through DBS Berpijar | Bahasa

Indonesia, 12 Dec 2022 - The era of technological disruption that is driven by innovation brings many social benefits. However, unequal access to technology has created “digital divide”, namely the gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology and those that don’t. The 2022 Network Readiness Index shows that Indonesia is lagging behind neighbouring countries in terms of internet technology readiness, ranked at number 59 out of the 131 countries surveyed. Considering that digital divide can disproportionately impact the potentials of future generations, Bank DBS Indonesia is committed to increasing digital and financial literacy among students at universities, polytechnics, and high schools through the “DBS Berpijar” education programme. DBS Group’s approach to sustainability is based on three pillars, namely Responsible Banking, Responsible Business Practice, and Create Impact Beyond Banking. DBS Berpijar is the embodiment of Bank DBS Indonesia's third pillar, namely to Create Impact Beyond Banking or to create a positive social impact.

DBS Berpijar, which takes Enhancing Digital and Financial Literacy to Encounter Economic Challenges and Global Competitiveness as its theme, is made up of three modules, namely Financial Literacy for Youth, Digital Literacy for Youth, and Sustainability in Business. The DBS Berpijar programme adopts the asynchronous learning method to allow participants the flexibility to choose instructors and content presented in video format and available on the futureskills.id page. The programme features practitioners from Bank DBS Indonesia who are experienced in their fields, including topics related to digitalisation, finance, marketing, sustainability, human resources and technology. Bank DBS Indonesia holds the DBS Berpijar programme in collaboration with Pijar Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides technology-based education services.

"Through the DBS Berpijar programme, we hope to nurture and equip the younger generation with future-ready skills to prepare them for the future. The DBS Berpijar programme involves Bank DBS Indonesia’s employees from different divisions to give presentations based on their expertise. We are also happy to be able to support government programmes through educational facilities such as DBS Berpijar. In the future, we hope to reach more students through innovative educational programmes," said Head of Group Strategic Marketing and Communications PT Bank DBS Indonesia Mona Monika.

Since its launch on 15 October 2022, more than 1,000 students from 33 universities in Indonesia have participated in the first batch of DBS Berpijar. Similar to the Merdeka Belajar Programme initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, DBS Berpijar enables participants who have completed the programme to obtain a certificate that can be converted into Semester Credit Units (SKS).

Director of Future Skills at Pijar Foundation Ageng Saijiwo explained that DBS Berpijar is designed to provide opportunities for Indonesian talent to become Future Talent - one of the three pillars of Pijar Foundation. The other two pillars are Future Planet and Future Innovation.

“Pijar Foundation is well aware that unequal distribution of talent can cause loss of growth potentials in other sectors, which is why equality in and easy access to education is crucial. Through this programme, we want to increase the potential of young people through self-learning modules presented by Bank DBS Indonesia’s employees from various divisions.”

Ageng added that education inclusiveness is at the heart of the programme, as indicated by the high enthusiasm of the participants regardless of their educational backgrounds and origins. The participants ask all kinds of questions, from financial planning, home ownership loan (KPR), retirement plans, to banking career and how to start a bank.

The collaboration is the first between Bank DBS Indonesia and Pijar Foundation. As part of its mission to support the development of education in Indonesia, Pijar Foundation provides guidance and helps strategic partners prepare for future trends, opportunities and challenges.

To fulfill the vision as the Best Bank for a Better World, DBS Group has three sustainability pillars, namely Responsible Banking, Responsible Business Practice, and Create Impact Beyond Banking. As the realisation of the third pillar, Bank DBS Indonesia is committed to making positive impact through a series of activities conducted through the People of Purpose (POP) employee volunteer movement. In addition to DBS Berpijar, Bank DBS Indonesia also promotes the #MakanTanpaSisa programme to increase public awareness of the problem of food waste.
