At DBS, we recognise that we can play a pivotal role in disaster relief through corporate donations as well as by by providing our expertise, equipment or other resources. In 2011, we opened our ATM network, AXS stations and iBanking channels to enable our DBS/POSB customers to donate more than SGD1 million to the "Red Cross Japan Disaster" fund, to help victims of the earthquake and subsequent Tsunami in Japan.
Similarly in 2013, we made available our self-service banking channels for donations from our customers to support the Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts. By leveraging our network of ATMs, internet and mobile banking channels, we were able to raise SGD800,000 from public donations for the “Red Cross-Haiyan Relief 2013”. A firm believer in leading by example, DBS also matched all staff donations dollar-to-dollar, raising SGD280,000 internally.
Our own people also chip in to help those affected rebuild their lives. For example, over 70 percent of our colleagues in Taiwan donated funds towards reconstruction efforts after Typhoon Morakot. In 2010, DBS staff helped construct 43 homes for displaced families whose houses were destroyed in the Padang earthquake, These efforts, coupled with generous contributions from the bank, customers and business partners, saw DBS donate IDR1 billion to ‘Habitat for Humanity’ to help rebuild homes and lives in the quake-hit city.
