Bank DBS Indonesia, together with Foodbank of Indonesia, initiates “Kulkas Berjalan” to distribute excess food to communities affected by Covid-19 in six locations in Jakarta

Indonesia, 18 Feb 2022 - Bank DBS Indonesia in collaboration with Foodbank of Indonesia (FOI) initiated the“Kulkas Berjalan” (Refrigerator Roadshow) or Food Truck programme to distribute food donations to citizens affected by Covid-19 in six areas in Jakarta. The programme aims at reducing food waste by collecting leftover food that is still fit for consumption and use it to create new meals, to be distributed to the recipients for two weeks. The programme is an extension of the #MakanTanpaSisa or #EatingwithoutLeftovers campaign aimed at raising the public’s awareness of and concern about the effects of food waste on the environment.

Ministry of Environment and Forestry data show that Indonesia produces 22.9 tons of waste annually and food waste contributes 27.9% to the amount. Although 64.81% of Indonesia’s waste is well managed, food waste still produces 1,702.9 megatons of CO2 or the equivalent of 7.29% of Indonesia’s national greenhouse emissions per year.

Foodbank of Indonesia CEO Hendro Utomo said, “The waste problem in the food industry remains a serious problem that needs to be addressed by all levels of society in Indonesia. Therefore, FOI collaborated with Bank DBS Indonesia to initiate the Refrigerator Roadshow or Food Truck programme aimed at preventing edible food waste. Through this activity, we engage people to fight hunger around us as well as protect the earth from the climate crisis by cleaning their plates and sharing food with those in need.”

Kulkas Berjalan is a follow-up of the #MakanTanpaSisa movement supported by Bank DBS Indonesia since 2020. Kulkas Berjalan is a refrigerator car that travels across Jakarta to distribute meals made from leftovers collected from supermarket chains that are still fit for consumption. The leftovers are use to create new meals to be distributed to people in need. The programme will run for two weeks in six locations in three different areas, namely Pesanggrahan, Kebayoran Lama, and Tanah Abang, Jakarta and will reach 1,200 people in need.

Mona Monika, Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications, PT Bank DBS Indonesia, said, “In line with one of our sustainability pillars, Creating Social Impact, Bank DBS Indonesia is actively initiating movements to protect the environment. Today, we collaborated with FOI to distribute food to people affected by the pandemic. The food is produced from the excess supply (surplus) as an effort to prevent food waste.”

Bank DBS Indonesia encourages advocacy and publicity efforts to raise public awareness about the problem of food waste, organises internal activities to involve employees in reducing food waste, and engages organisations that fight food waste. Fully aware that most of the waste in Indonesia comes from households, Bank DBS Indonesia invites people to take part in efforts to overcome this environmental problem through the ‘Towards Zero Food Waste’ movement, starting with waste management in 2020, followed by the #MakanTanpaSisa campaign in 2021. The ‘Towards Zero Food Waste’ campaign won the ‘Highly Commended’ award in the ‘Purpose-Driven Communications’ category from Reuters ‘Responsible Business Awards 2021’ for six regional markets where DBS operates.

Earlier, Bank DBS Indonesia organised the #KreasiMakanTanpaSisa Cooking Battle programme that demonstrated ways to turn overnight food-waste into a snack that could be re-consumed so that it did not go to waste. The programme was a cooking competition that saw Rudy Tandjung, Director of Consumer Banking Group, PT Bank DBS Indonesia, challenging Masterchef Indonesia 8 contestant Olivia Tommy and the owner of Diet & Catering Sehat Nutrify, Jackline Herman, to create meals from leftovers.
