Bank DBS Indonesia boosts sustainability efforts in managing ecological footprints | Bahasa
Paulus Sutisna, President Director of PT Bank DBS Indonesia, said, “Sustainable finance puts the banking industry centre stage in promoting and contributing to efforts to maintain environmental sustainability and balance, including DBS Group that has pledged the commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. As a purpose-driven bank, in 2021 Bank DBS Indonesia was able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 12% to 5,131 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (TCO2e) from 5,836 TCO2e in 2020.”
Bank DBS Indonesia’s sustainability agenda is based on three sustainability pillars, namely Responsible Banking, Responsible Business Practices, and Creating Social Impact. Under the Responsible Business Practices pillar, Bank DBS Indonesia set forth the efforts to manage its ecological footprints and social impacts in the 2021 Sustainability Initiative Report, namely:
- The installation of 356 solar panels at the Juanda branch and eco-friendly air conditioners
To reduce its carbon footprints, Bank DBS Indonesia installed 356 solar panels at its Juanda branch office in Jakarta. The solar panels provide 16% of the total operational energy needed. In addition, Bank DBS Indonesia has used more eco-friendly R32 air conditioners to replace R22 air conditioners.
In 2022, Bank DBS Indonesia will build solar panels at its Pemuda branch office in Surabaya as well as replace the lighting at DBS Bank Tower, Ciputra World Jakarta, with LED lighting technology.
Bank DBS Indonesia consistently applies the principles of sustainability in its office buildings. For its efforts, Bank DBS Indonesia was awarded the Green Mark Platinum Award for Healthier Workplaces for the Capital Place Headquarters from the Building and Construction Authority-Health Promotion Board (BCA-HPB) Singapore. In 2021, Bank DBS Indonesia was awarded the Green Mark Gold Award for Healthier Workplaces from the Build and Construction Authority-Health Promotion Board (BCA-HPB) Singapore for the Kemayoran branch office.
The awards were given based on the jury’s assessment of the company’s effort in ensuring efficient use of energy and resources in the buildings, including air conditioning, lighting, and water usage as well as waste management.
- Responsible and sustainable waste management
Bank DBS Indonesia continues to manage its waste sustainably at nearly all of its branch offices and HQ to ensure the waste it produces does not end up in landfills. Through collaboration with social enterprise Waste4Change, in 2021 the total amount of waste managed reached 120 tons, whereas the total amount of recycled waste reached 30 tons. Of the amount, around 19 tons of paper were recycled (excluding printed bank statements) and the total amount of compost produced from food waste reached 12 tons.
On top of that, digital transformation is part of Bank DBS Indonesia’s commitment to running a sustainable business. By replacing paper bank statements with e-statements, Bank DBS Indonesia has reduced the use of paper by 1,292,112 and envelopes by 17,946, and in the process helps save around 164 trees per year (ref: akuinginhijau.org).
- Procurement of 108 low emission company vehicles
To support the need for company vehicles on a national scale while reducing carbon emissions, Bank DBS Indonesia has since 1 September 2021 replaced 108 corporate vehicles with low emission Renault Triber cars. The ethical/eco-friendly vehicles help reduce carbon emissions by 8.55 TCO2E per month. The new fleet is also able to reduce pollution from gas emissions and actually has greater energy efficiency of up to 16% compared with the previous types of vehicles.
“To help make the world a better place, Bank DBS Indonesia is committed to creating various breakthroughs in sustainable resources management. We will continue to provide innovative and satisfying banking solutions in line with our principle Live More, Bank Less while focusing on the sustainability aspects,” said Paulus Sutisna.
Bank DBS Indonesia’s commitment to social enterprises, employees and social foundations through its sustainability programmes has earned recognition from the media and industry, including Responsible Business Awards 2021 - Highly Commended - in the category of Purpose-Driven Communications from Reuters; Indonesia Corporate Sustainability Award 2021 in the category of Responsible Business Practices, Employee Volunteering, Digital Cause Promotions, and Corporate Sustainability Warrior from SWA Network; and The Drums Awards for Social Purpose 2021 - Highly Commended.
