At DBS, our people are our greatest asset, and we believe in developing them both professionally and personally, so that they can remain at the forefront of banking.”DBS has embedded IBF standards into our DBS Academy training programmes to ensure employees have ample opportunities to constantly upgrade their skills. There are learning councils in each business unit tasked to design training programs leveraging the IBF standards. An example would be the newly accredited DBS Wealth Management Programme by the Consumer Learning Council. Since 2007, the bank has focused on developing IBF accredited in-house programmes to help staff acquire relevant skill sets under a framework that aligns learning and development initiatives with business objectives and industry standards.

Joseph Koh Seng Leong
Institutional Banking Group, DBS
Joseph was a former national athlete and represented Team Singapore in many international and regional sailing competitions. He took part in the 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, was the 2010 Asian Sailing Championship Champion and silver medalist at the 1997 and 2007 SEA Games. He won the Singapore Youth Award in 2009 in the Sports and Adventure Category and was part of the 13th National Youth Council. Joseph joined DBS in 2012 and has participated in various training programmes and rotations which helped him make the switch from professional athlete to professional in the financial industry.
“I joined DBS shortly after retiring from national sailing 3 years ago. The transition from being a national athlete to a professional in the financial industry was initially quite challenging. For starters, being more deskbound took some getting used to as I enjoy sailing and training outdoors. As I took 4-5 years off to pursue professional sports, my peers were already ahead in the corporate ladder so I had to build up my network with my working peers. But this turned out to be a positive thing, as I got to know more people as a result. I joined the DBS Management Associate Programme in 2012 and was introduced to rotations in the front and middle office and operations. These roles and the many courses I participated in helped to broaden my knowledge and gave me more exposure to different areas in banking and finance. On top of the structured programmes, my supervisors also encouraged me to take up other training courses related to my work so as to keep up with industry trends and widen my competencies. In my current role as a relationship manager in the Institutional Banking Group at DBS, I found the training courses on Credit, Advanced Working Capital and Financial Analysis fundamental to my responsibilities. These helped to improve my skill sets and increase my confidence, and I am appreciative of the projects and customer portfolios that I get at work. I am still sailing on a recreational basis, and I am glad I am able to pursue my passion as well as move forward in my career simultaneously.”
