DBS Bank Indonesia, Blibli, and Magalarva collaborated through the ' More sustainability actions, less waste' campaign. This action was launched in line with the spirit to support a sustainable Indonesia. This campaign is part of the #MakanTanpaSisa movement that has been run by Bank DBS Indonesia since 2020 and this time by processing expired food so it doesn't end up in landfills to create a sustainable environment. In this collaboration, Magalarva collects expired food in the Blibli warehouse to be processed into animal feed. Bank DBS Indonesia acts as a facilitator connecting Blibli with Magalarva as a social entrepreneur partner of the DBS Foundation. The launch of the collaboration was attended by Head of Group Marketing Strategic & Communications, PT Bank DBS Indonesia Mona Monika, Senior Vice President Operations – Logistics & Warehouse, Blibli Bayu Sudjono, and Founder & CEO, Magalarva Rendria Labde.

Data from Waste4Change in 2021 shows the number of holding capacity in all landfills in Indonesia is almost full. This is triggered by the Indonesian people who throw away at least 23-48 million tons of food waste per year [1]. DKI Jakarta is the area with the highest level of waste disposal in Indonesia, which is 455.3 million m3/year and accounts for almost 28% of the total waste in the provinces of Indonesia[2].

Head of Group Marketing Strategic & Communications, PT Bank DBS Indonesia Mona Monika said, “Bank DBS Indonesia continues to strive to create long-term impacts for environmental sustainability. In line with our sustainability pillar, namely Impact Beyond Banking , Bank DBS Indonesia is committed to running a business with a sustainability agenda through collaboration with industry players and environmental activist organizations who share a similar vision. We believe that each party plays an equally important role in jointly reducing food waste that has a negative impact on global warming. Working with strategic partners gives us hope that we are on the right track to reduce the impact of carbon emissions towards a more sustainable Indonesia.”

Through this collaboration, Blibli provides excess food that has expired in the form of groceries, including packaged food such as biscuits, cereals, instant noodles, seasoned flour, sauces, sweetened condensed, tea, coffee, powdered milk, liquid milk, and other processed materials. These expired foodstuffs will be periodically transported by Magalarva from Blibli's three warehouses located in Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi to be processed into fish and shrimp feed. Not only saving about 13 tons of food waste, this collaboration can produce five tons of animal feed which will be absorbed by fish and shrimp farmers in Indonesia.

Senior Vice President Operations – Logistics & Warehouse, Blibli Bayu Sudjono said, "In line with Blibli's Action for Earth Love, we welcome this collaboration in recycling food waste into animal feed, so that it can provide benefits for fish and shrimp cultivators in Indonesia. In addition, this food waste management also optimizes the storage of goods in the Blibli warehouse so that it is more efficient. Blibli's collaboration with Bank DBS Indonesia in the #MakanTanpaSisa movement is expected to inspire the wider community in implementing an eco-conscious lifestyle."

As a partner in this collaboration, Magalarva is a social entrepreneur engaged in sustainable animal feed by processing organic waste using Black Soldier Fly larvae so as to contribute to the circular economy. Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) is a more sustainable and efficient source of protein. Magalarva has several products such as insect protein for animal feed, insect oil, and organic fertilizer.

“The collaboration in processing food waste with Bank DBS Indonesia and Blibli is a good step to save the environment. Since its establishment in 2017, Magalarva has moved to close the circle of consumption by eliminating the accumulation of organic waste for a more sustainable future. Now every day we can process at least 10 tons of food waste in Indonesia into sustainable products, such as fish and shrimp feed. Through this collaboration, Magalarva hopes that there will be more and more parties who are aware of the importance of processing food waste,” said Founder & CEO, Magalarva Rendria Labde.

Bank DBS Indonesia as a bank driven by positive goals continues to launch various programs to reduce food waste in Indonesia through the #MakanTanpaSisa campaign. Since its launch in 2020, the #MakanTanpaSisa movement by Bank DBS Indonesia has managed more than 43 tons of food and organic waste as a concrete action to improve the welfare of the environment and society. In 2021 the #MakanTanpaSisa movement donated 20 tons, and in 2022 it targets a food impact contribution of 26 tons. This movement continues to be carried out and developed to increase public awareness about the impact of food waste and reduce food waste produced, as well as to have a good impact on the environment in the long term through environmentally responsible business management. Bank DBS Indonesia targets an additional 26 tons of food impact in 2022.

The entire campaign 'More sustainability actions, less waste' is an effort by Bank DBS Indonesia to collaborate with companies and other partners, solving the environmental and community sustainability’ challenge to make it 'More like an eco-warrior, less like a bank' .
