Enhance the security of your digital transactions in Ramadan hassle-free with Bank DBS Indonesia!
Indonesia, 03 Apr 2024 - The month of Ramadan is almost over and usually we have by now received the religious holiday allowance (
tunjangan hari raya
, THR). Normally, we spend THR on all the things we need to welcome the holiday such as new clothes, hampers, tickets for homebound trips, and recreational activities.
The digital age has changed the way we celebrate
Hari Raya
. Easy access to information, digital banking and fintech have opened new ways of shopping for
Hari Raya
needs. This phenomenon is in line with the
World Bank
’s
report that sees Indonesians spend USD70 billion (equivalent to Rp1,104.25 trillion) in Ramadan this year. Moreover, the various attractive deals and discounts offered on the National Online Shopping Day or
Harbolnas
that falls on the “twin date” 4.4, will certainly drive us to shop more.
Although it's easier than ever to perform transactions, it's important for us to keep updating our knowledge about safe digital transactions. That being the case, let's take a look at these tips for preparing for Ramadan and
Lebaran
!
1. Check and protect digital accounts before transferring THR to family members
With Eid al-Fitr fast approaching, we perform the annual ritual of giving THR or a portion of our income to family members or close relatives such as parents, children nephews, and nieces. Apart from handing over cash directly, we can also transfer the money digitally, which is easier and faster.
To ensure transaction security, it's a good idea to regularly check the activity of your banking accounts and digital wallets. Always enable transaction alerts so that you can immediately spot any suspicious activity. Also, use strong passwords and always enable the two-factor authentication (2FA) code whenever possible for added protection.
For those who have family members or friends in other countries, fret not! Simply use the digibank by DBS app's Foreign Exchange Transfer feature and you can share your happiness safely despite the distance.
If you find any irregularities in your transactions, contact Bank DBS Indonesia Customer Center at 0804 1500 327 or +6221 2985 2888 (from outside Indonesia) to secure your banking account.
2. Avoid using public Wi-Fi when buying tickets for homebound trips (
mudik
)
The annual mass homebound exodus (
mudik
) is a cultural tradition performed ahead of
Lebaran
when people return to their hometowns to be with family and relatives. One of the common things to do before
mudik
is to book tickets way in advance to secure seats and snag affordable prices.
Many a time we use public Wi-Fi while in restaurants, shopping centers, or cafes to make transactions, including booking for
mudik
tickets. A free and fast Wi-Fi connection certainly makes us feel at ease because it helps us save on Internet quota.
Not many people know that using public Wi-Fi exposes them to hacker attacks, malware, and eavesdropping. Hackers can easily obtain personal information and trick us because of the weak security of public Wi-Fi. Therefore, avoid doing online transactions as much as possible while on public Wi-Fi. If you want to shop, buy travel tickets, book hotels, or make donations, you should only use your personal internet quota. We can also activate the Virtual Private Network (VPN) feature when using public Wi-Fi to hide our real identity and encrypt all sites that contain our important data.
Additionally, when you're done using Wi-Fi in a public place, always log out by clicking the "Forget Network" option to avoid unwanted things when you return to the place and connect to Wi-Fi automatically. These tips are not just for booking tickets for homebound trips and
Lebaran
moments as they are also relevant all year round!
3. Be careful when paying
zakat
or accessing digital alms platforms
For those who want to fulfill their obligations in the Holy Month, it is important to use trusted platforms so that our donations are delivered properly and managed appropriately. Therefore, when paying
zakat,
always make sure to choose reputable platforms trusted by many with good transparency reports.
In addition, the Quick Response Indonesia Standard (QRIS) facilitates
zakat
payment. Just scan the QRIS code, enter the password,
et voila
! However, we must be alert to fraud. Beware of fake QRIS in public places and fake websites. If you want to pay
zakat
using QRIS at a transaction location, pay attention to the location, do not scan the code if it looks suspicious, pay attention to the merchant’s name displayed when scanning the code, and make sure the destination name for the QRIS code matches the actual merchant. Do not make payments using QRIS code that includes shortened URL links such as
www.zkt16.qris.id
.
Then there are people who fake their real identity either on social media or by phone and falsely claim to be representatives of certain organisations or institutions in order to obtain personal data and deceive us. Therefore, make sure not to give important information such as your full name, personal credit/debit card number, card expiration date, and Card Verification Value (CVV) code easily, and always make sure that you are informed of how the data you provide are being used.
If you are suspicious of the contact person and the procedure, check the official and verified website to ensure their authenticity. If it proves to be a fake or fraudulent account, ignore the message and immediately report the account or caller to prevent more victims.
4. Beware of social engineering and use contactless transactions to ensure safety
It is important that we know about social engineering, a type of scam that involves the use of deception and manipulation of human errors to gain access to personal information or valuable data. Usually, the perpetrators pretend to be someone they are not such as customer service officers, TV show producers, or travel and tour agents. They promise us attractive prizes or deals in exchange for our personal data and use the information to gain access to our savings accounts and drain them. While deals and discounts are attractive, we must remain alert! Always make sure they are legitimate and when in doubt or if you find evidence that it is a scam, block the number immediately so that it doesn't contact you again in the future.
In addition, when entering personal data such as credit card number and CVV code, make sure you only fill in forms on authorised websites/platforms and always use two-factor authentication (2FA) code. Even easier, when performing transactions in public places, we can use the DBS Visa contactless debit card by tapping the debit card into the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) machine without the need to transfer the card to another person and enter a PIN. The card also has a transaction limit of Rp1,000,000 per day to mitigate the risks associated with unauthorised card usage.
