Indonesia, 11 Oct 2024 - The challenges of food waste management and food security in Indonesia present opportunities for innovation. In the agricultural sector, foodstuffs that do not meet demand requirements can still be optimally utilised. Meanwhile, in the culinary, tourism and retail industries, there is continued effort to adjust stock management to business development. Cross-sectoral cooperation between various industries plays an important role in realising good management of excess food while helping vulnerable communities in need of food assistance.

To commemorate World Food Day that took “The right to food for a better life and future” as its theme and as part of the Food Rescue Warrior programme, FoodCycle Indonesia organised a Food Marathon in collaboration with DBS Foundation and Marriott Business Council Jakarta.

"The Food Rescue Warrior programme is a collaborative effort between FoodCycle Indonesia and DBS Foundation launched in April 2024. The programme aims to rescue excess food from the hotel, restaurant, café (HoReCa), retail, and agriculture industries, and distribute it to those in need. Since its inception, the programme has distributed around 300,000 food packages and reached 35,000 beneficiaries. The programme, as well as our support for the Food Marathon, is in line with DBS Foundation's mission to inspire 'From a Spark Within to Impact Beyond', which is expected to be a driving force for parties like FoodCycle Indonesia to contribute to the welfare of the wider community and environmental preservation,” said Mona Monika, Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications at PT Bank DBS Indonesia.

The initiative brings together a network of multi-partners to prepare 10,000 ready-to-eat meals from potentially wasted food. A total of 15 chefs from Marriott International hotels in Jakarta will be involved in this event to creatively transform the ingredients.

“This collaboration with FoodCycle is part of Marriott Business Council Jakarta's Serve 360 initiative, under which we collaborate with Non-Governmental Organisations to be a force for good in addressing the world's most pressing social, economic and environmental issues,” said Jennifer Suryadi, General Manager of Le Meridien Jakarta and Co-Chair of Marriott Business Council Jakarta. “Guided by our Corporate Sustainability and Social Impact Goals 2025, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we are committed to creating a positive and sustainable impact wherever we do business.”

Herman Andryanto, Co-founder of FoodCycle Indonesia, emphasised the importance of collaboration of all parties – governments, the private sector, and the public. “We are very grateful and excited to organise this event because there are so many parties who support FoodCycle to achieve our mission of zero food waste and zero hunger. I would like to thank all the stakeholders and event partners involved, namely: DBS Foundation, Marriott Business Council Jakarta, Modena Culinaria, Fresh Factory, Mie Burung Dara, FKS Group, Astro, Banda Supply, Havi, Indofood, Holland Bakery, Kaneka, Lemonilo, and several packing houses in Lembang.

“As part of our commitment to ESG at FKS Group, where one of the pillars is related to Food Security and also represents our fellow donors, we strongly support the Food Marathon as an inspiration for the food industry in Indonesia to continue to strive for excellence in achieving sustainability and responsible food production processes,” said Agung Cahyadi Kusumo, Chief Executive Officer at PT FKS Multi Agro.

The Food Marathon was opened at MODENA Experience Center Suryo, presenting a collaboration of 15 chefs from various Marriott International hotels in Jakarta. The chefs used their creativity to serve dishes for the underprivileged.

“As one of the largest consumer electronics companies in Indonesia and the world, we have a big responsibility to support sustainability practices, including food waste reduction efforts, which are in line with the 12th Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs): Sustainable Consumption and Production. In addition, this partnership is also part of MODENA's commitment to continuing collaborating through sustainability initiatives, as mandated by the 17th SDGs: Partnerships for the Goals. We are proud to be a partner in this event, which not only highlights the importance of zero food waste among the public, but also supports FoodCycle Indonesia's initiative in reducing environmental impact through the utilisation of food ingredients that are nearing expiration,” said Nicole Jizhar, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Advisor at MODENA.

From October 14 to October 19, 2024, 10,000 meal packages weighing approximately 3 tonnes will be cooked and distributed to more than 60 beneficiary organisations in Greater Jakarta. The food distribution is supported by Fresh Factory, a cold chain startup company that is committed to delivering these meals in prime condition and safe for the recipients.

“We are very grateful to be able to participate in this event. Speed and accuracy of delivery is our priority to ensure the food that has been carefully prepared by Marriott International hotel chefs arrive on time. We are committed to delivering the food according to the agreed time to maintain the safety of the food when enjoyed by the recipients,” said Larry Ridwan, CEO and Co-Founder of Fresh Factory.
