HONG KONG,01 November 2019 -

With Hong Kong ramping up efforts to cultivate and nurture local FinTech talent, DBS Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Faculty of Engineering recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the inaugural Master of Science in Financial Technology programme (MSc FinTech).

The MOU is a collaborative first designed to further foster digital innovation and academic strength, and was signed by Professor Martin Wong, CUHK’s Dean of Engineering, and Brit Blakeney, Head of Innovation & Ecosystems, DBS Hong Kong. Under the MOU, students of the Master of Science in Financial Technology programme will gain first-hand experience on FinTech-related projects, including digital customer journey, API application, big data analytics, blockchain, artificial intelligence, machine learning, sustainability, as well as internship opportunities, and insights and knowledge sharing by DBS Hong Kong mentors.

In Hong Kong, DBS, the first bank in the world to hold three of the most prestigious global best bank honours at the same time, and twice named World’s Best Digital Bank by Euromoney, is pioneering efforts to transform the way banks serve, engage and interact with customers through FinTech innovation.

Professor Martin Wong remarked, “It is an honour for us to collaborate with DBS Hong Kong on internship, industrial project and job placement for our MSc FinTech students. FinTech has undeniable importance and groundbreaking effects in reshaping the landscape of the financial sector, and there is no better way for our students to learn from experts and to gain hands-on experiences from the industry. Our MSc FinTech programme is committed to nurturing technologically adept and business savvy talents who can offer innovative solutions to finance-related industries. This collaboration is beneficial to both sides as we firmly believe that extending and strengthening academic and corporate relationships is crucial to the development of financial technologists. What our students learn in class will complement perfectly in handling real-life projects and challenges proposed by the industrial practitioners”.

Brit Blakeney remarked, “Banks can no longer work in silos and can only be successful by materially transforming the way they work and by collaborating with FinTechs. While DBS has always been the pioneer in nurturing startups and helping them grow, by working more closely with CUHK, the first and leading university offering a Master of FinTech programme, this further demonstrates our strong commitment to cultivating the next generation of talents in Hong Kong. We are all very excited to see how these extremely talented students will transform and innovate the industry.”
