The DBS QR Gift (popularly known as ‘QR Ang Bao’) enables customers to load cash values onto unique QR codes, and is Singapore’s only ‘phygital’ alternative to gifting. It allows customers to preserve and continue the CNY tradition of giving and receiving red packets, and at the same time, contributes to a more sustainable environment. Since its launch in 2019, DBS QR Gift has been well-received by customers with around SGD 2.8 million loaded onto QR gift cards during CNY last year.

Jeremy Soo, Head of Consumer Banking Group (Singapore), DBS Bank said, “Exchanging ang baos is a well-loved and time-honoured CNY tradition that symbolises good fortune and luck. We believe DBS QR Gift is a good balance between tradition and technology. By offering the complimentary delivery service, we hope to make the DBS QR Gift cards a lot more accessible to our customers, so they can keep the tradition going and safely share good blessings with their loved ones even during the pandemic.”

Celebrating a sustainable CNY with DBS QR Gift

DBS QR Gift cards are made of environmentally-friendly, FSC-certified paper, and are designed to be gifted on their own – thus doing away with the need for new notes and red packets, both of which incur significant carbon footprint. According to the Monetary Authority of Singapore, printing new notes generates around 330 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. Red packets, with the amount of ink and gold stamping involved, are also not easy to recycle and often end up incinerated.

To this end, DBS partnered Tay Paper Recycling in 2019 to launch a dedicated red packet recycling initiative – the first bank in Singapore to do so – to collect and recycle red packets, DBS QR Gift cards and even Mandarin orange carriers. Collected recyclables are then converted into paper pulp, then mixed with other raw materials to create new paper products. Located at DBS/POSB branches and available all-year round, these recycling bins have collected 210 trees (or 12,500 kg) worth of recyclables till date.
