DBS Hack2Hire 2019 launches inaugural Hack2Hire-Her to double female technologists intake this year
Applicants to create intelligent bank during hackathon challenge
The DBS-SMU Sustainability Initiative is a pioneer in Southeast Asia – introducing a sustainability major supported by research and scholarships.
Through this year’s programme, the bank is looking to hire as many technologists as it can find across 10 roles. The bank is looking to hire new roles such as chaos engineers[1] and security engineers. DBS will also continue to hire mobile app developers, data engineers, full stack developers, DevOps engineers, QA engineers, UX/UI developers and scrum masters. Females continue to be under-represented in the technology space. Companies and leaders, both male and female, need to continue to make greater effort to support gender diversity and attract women as they bring different skillsets and perspectives to traditionally male-dominated tech and finance industries, said Soh Siew Choo, Managing Director and Head of Consumer Banking and Big Data Analytics Technology.
In the past two years, approximately 5% of Hack2Hire applicants were female. To attract a bigger pool of female applicants, DBS is stepping up its game by launching Hack2Hire-Her. “DBS is well-recognised for its gender diversity agenda and recently included in the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index for the second consecutive year. Increasing female representation in our technology roles will enable us to tap into a wider talent pool and ensure greater diversity of ideas in everything we build. This is a crucial differentiating factor to help us drive superior client experience in our digital transformation journey,” she said.
One beneficiary of DBS’ diversity agenda is Evelyn Loo, a mobile app developer who joined the bank through Hack2Hire last year. “Working in DBS’ technology team has been great for my career. It has opened my eyes to the possibilities of growing in not just technology, but the banking industry as well. I have picked up design thinking skills that help me build and code with the customer in mind while being continuously challenged to keep up with the latest technology trends. The supportive environment of continuous learning and growth has enabled me to develop myself to the fullest potential.”
DBS Hack2Hire consists of two parts - an online assessment challenge to gauge the relevant technical capabilities of candidates, followed by a live two-day hackathon, where the candidates approach to problem solving and teamwork will be put to the test. Shortlisted candidates from the second round will be offered full-time roles at DBS.
