Bank DBS Indonesia collaborates with TEDxJakarta to increase public awareness of sustainable future through the #MakanTanpaSisa movement

Indonesia, 12 Oct 2020 - The Economist Intelligence Unit’s assessment of food sustainability (Food Sustainability Index 2018) found that Indonesia is the biggest contributor of food waste among developing countries, producing around 300 kg of food waste per person per year. To help deal with the problem, Bank DBS Indonesia initiated the #MakanTanpaSisa movement as part of the “Towards Zero Food Waste” campaign. After two consecutive years of collaborating with TEDxJakarta, a community with a mission to spread positive ideas around the world, Bank DBS Indonesia participated in the COUNTDOWN 2020 by TEDxJakarta that aims at building a better future as part of the commitment to a world without carbon pollution.

COUNTDOWN 2020 is a global initiative that emphasises the urgency of accelerating solutions in response to the climate crisis through leadership, breakthroughs, and transformation. Through this session, TEDxJakarta shares creative and inspirational ideas in handling the crisis with a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030. One way to achieve this is by dealing with food loss and food waste in landfills. Bank DBS Indonesia as a bank that prioritises a balance in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) aspects, shares the same mission and, together with TEDxJakarta, seeks to increase public awareness of food loss and food waste to create a better world (building back better).

"After focusing on the issue of solid waste, in 2020, Bank DBS Indonesia is continuing its 'Recycle more, Waste less' mission by inviting people to participate in reducing food waste in Indonesia through the #MakanTanpaSisa movement. Focusing on food loss and food waste that have an impact on climate change, this movement is expected to increase people’s awareness of food waste to create a more sustainable and safer world for everyone," said Executive Director, Head of Group Strategic Marketing Communication PT Bank DBS Indonesia, Mona Monika.

For this year’s session, Bank DBS Indonesia joined the Fireside Chat COUNTDOWN by TEDxJakarta session with social enterprises, namely Tanijoy and Garda Pangan. The session shared information about Bank DBS Indonesia’s effort in reducing food waste, creating a sustainable environment and business, and how the two social enterprises play their roles. Tanijoy aims at building a better agricultural ecosystem by empowering local farmers through start-to-end agricultural solutions by offering an integrated ecosystem. Meanwhile, Garda Pangan is a food bank that aims at becoming a center for coordination of the distribution of excess food that may go to waste to the poor.

"Tanijoy is here to bring happiness into the lives of all stakeholder components, from farmers to consumers, through agriculture. To make this happen, we apply technology, empower local communities, increase farmers' income, create new agripreneurs in rural areas, and collaborate with other parties to build a better agricultural sector, one of them Bank DBS Indonesia through DBS Foundation that supports social enterprises planning to build or develop a business. In addition to providing grants for mature social enterprises, Bank DBS Indonesia also provides great business and networking opportunities to accelerate innovation and sustainable business in creating social impacts," said Tanijoy CEO Muhamad Nanda Putra.

Garda Pangan founder and CEO Eva Bachtiar explained Garda Pangan’s social mission, which grew out of the concern of one of the founders of Garda Pangan, Dedhy Trunoyudho, a wedding catering entrepreneur who faces food waste problems every week. From a business point of view, throwing away food is ideal because it is fast, cheap and practical to do. "We looked at food disposal practices and finally decided to redistribute excess food that could go to waste. We are happy that currently, there are many parties who support us, including Bank DBS Indonesia that has contributed to the growth and development of our social enterprise," he said.

During the session, Bank DBS Indonesia explained further about the #MakanTanpaSisa movement that helps reduce food waste in three easy and simple ways. Firstly is “Watch to Donate”, watching an educational video about the #MakanTanpaSisa movement and sharing the video to reach 10 million views that will be converted into eight tons of food portions for those in need. Secondly, capturing and uploading photos of plates before and after eating to reduce food waste to Instagram according to the requirements. Thirdly, contributing to the “Buy 1 Meal to Give 1 Meal” programme to buy a single meal on the Yummybox application using a digibank credit card to donate one nutritious meal box. Bank DBS Indonesia also works with Garda Pangan to enable digibank credit card customers to donate food by exchanging their reward points. So far, 300 food packages have been distributed through this programme. In addition, through the DBS Stronger Together Fund programme, Bank DBS Indonesia has distributed around 70,000 staple food packages and ready-to-eat food through the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSBSI) and Foodbank of Indonesia (FOI).

As a company that is driven by sustainable goals and committed to creating a better world for all people in every business activity, Bank DBS Indonesia actively voices sustainability issues and consistently makes efforts in business aspects and everyday culture based on three pillars, namely responsible banking, responsible business practices, and creating social impacts. This is done through collaboration with various parties, Bank DBS Indonesia’s corporate culture, and a digital banking approach that makes all employees part of the sustainability.

In carrying out responsible banking practices, Bank DBS Indonesia supports environmentally friendly companies, including PT Sumatera Timberindo Industry (STI / 'Wira Door'), the first premium wood furniture door manufacturer in Indonesia. Bank DBS Indonesia provides export financing and loans for environmentally friendly businesses (export financing sustainability-linked loans). In addition, Bank DBS Indonesia published the world's first Sustainable and Transition Finance Framework and Taxonomy to help customers map and start their journey towards a sustainable business model while providing timely financial transitions and accelerating transactions and project transparency.

In addition to focusing on creating employment and profit, Bank DBS Indonesia also considers the environmental and social aspects of a business. This is accommodated in the responsible business practices pillar that focuses on sustainable implementation by Bank DBS Indonesia. One initiative is carried out in the office area of Bank DBS Indonesia at DBS Bank Tower and Capital Place through collaboration with Waste4Change, one of the social enterprise partners of Bank DBS Indonesia, to manage the waste and turn off the lights during lunch time. Bank DBS Indonesia has also installed solar panels in several branches, including the DBS Pekanbaru and Bandung branches, as well as several other initiatives.

In addition, Bank DBS Indonesia also actively works together with communities and social enterprises through DBS Foundation in implementing the third pillar, namely to create social impacts. Through DBS Foundation, Bank DBS Indonesia focuses on supporting and advancing social enterprises in Indonesia through various programmes, from education, mentoring, business training, to utilisation and grants. At the end of last August, to provide the latest information about the latest condition and tips for social enterprises in Indonesia, DBS Foundation in collaboration with FEB UI published the latest book in the "Profit untuk Misi Sosial" (Profit for Social Mission) series that can be downloaded free of charge at go.dbs.com/id-sehb. There is also the annual DBS Foundation Social Enterprise Grant Programme that provides grants and assistance to 15 selected social enterprises from China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Singapore, and Taiwan. In 2019, Tanijoy from Indonesia was one of the nine social enterprises in Asia selected as grant recipients.
