Joining forces to amplify efforts and raise awareness around food crisis

Food waste in Hong Kong is a pressing issue; according to the Environmental Protection Department latest ‘Waste Statistics’ report, the total quantity of municipal solid waste disposal at landfills in 2021 was 4.15 million tonnes, with food waste being the largest contributor, accounting for 30 per cent. foodpanda and DBS share the same commitment and focus towards sustainability practices and a greener future, and have joined forces with hopes to promote behavioral change, reduce food waste at the source, and deepen consumers’ understanding on the environmental consequences of food wastage.

As a purpose-driven bank, DBS is committed to their push for zero food waste. To build a more secure and sustainable future, DBS kickstarted their bank-wide Zero Food Waste (ZFW) initiative in 2020, whereby they aim to reduce food waste by advocating public awareness of the issue, reducing food waste in their business operations, and collaborating with ecosystem partners to scale impact. Amy Wu, Executive Director and Head of Group Strategic Marketing & Communications, DBS Bank (Hong Kong) Limited said, “DBS is delighted to partner with foodpanda to promote Zero Food Waste, with a goal to raise public awareness on waste reduction, and to alleviate hunger and poverty. We continue to strive for creating impact beyond banking and driving positive environmental and social impacts, through empowering a more sustainable living to our customers in their daily lives.

To participate in the donation matching programme, DBS Credit Cardholders just need to tap the ‘Donate a Meal’ donation button on the order tracking page after completing a delivery or self pick-up order on foodpanda. Ryan Lai, Chief Executive Officer of foodpanda Hong Kong said, “Our sustainability vision is built upon three environmental pillars: minimising food waste, cutting carbon footprint, and reducing plastics waste. We launched our ‘Donate a meal’ feature four months ago, and have thus far raised enough donations to provide 50,000 hot and nutritious meals for people in need. With the donation matching campaign, we hope to encourage more consumers to make meal donations to help feed hungry families in Hong Kong, and to support us on our sustainability journey.”

‘Replacing hunger with a smile’ is the mission of Foodlink Foundation, who already has existing long-term partnerships with both organisations. In 2020, DBS sponsored a new refrigerated van for Foodlink Foundation’s food collection operations, and as of April 2023, the van has been used to collect 161 tonnes of safe-to-eat surplus food from F&B outlets all over the city and deliver it to the underprivileged. As for foodpanda, apart from ongoing donations to Foodlink Foundation from their ‘Donate a Meal’ feature, foodpanda’s 24/7 online supermarket, pandamart began distributing their surplus food through Foodlink Foundation to people in need beginning 2021, with over 30,000 meals successfully delivered to date. Robin Hwang, Executive Director of Foodlink Foundation said, “Societal awareness towards the issue of food wastage has always been lacking. This joint effort with foodpanda and DBS - two long-term partners of ours, is a great opportunity for us to tackle the issue of food insecurity in Hong Kong, encouraging the public to reduce food waste at source, and to value the food we receive. The donation raised will be used to provide a hot and nutritious meal to people in need, supporting Foodlink Foundation’s ongoing mission in fighting hunger.”
