Hainan Star Farmer

Our beginnings

In 2014, Super Typhoon Rammasun hit Wenchang in Hainan Province and left vast areas of farmland equivalent to the size of over 1,000 football fields salinised by seawater intrusion – and uncultivatable.

Su Jiancheng was a volunteer to the frontline Disaster Relief. He soon realised that earthworm biotechnology could be used to improve the land condition by reducing the saline levels to allow the rehabilitation of the land for farming. He founded Hainan Star Farmer to apply this technology to regenerate degraded land and is on a mission to lift the livelihoods of farmers across China.

The work we do

Using local agricultural organic waste and earthworms, Su Jiancheng found a way to produce soil conditioners that successfully improve and rehabilitate saline-alkali soil left barren by typhoons. Today, apart from using earthworm biotechnology to deal with agricultural waste pollution, Star Farmer also makes earthworm castings into soil conditioner for sale. This can be used to improve soil damaged by various conditions, such as saline soil, sandy soil, land polluted by heavy metal, and barren land.

Our mission is to achieve productive and sustainable agriculture through the efficient use of every inch of arable land and resources by applying innovative soil improvement technology, providing quality agricultural products and planting services, and promoting the efficient development of eco-agriculture.

Once uncultivatable land now produces fresh vegetables in abundance after rehabilitation by Star Farmer.

Impact created

By improving the physical and chemical properties of soil, we help to repair degraded land and turn them into productive, fertile resources. This increases the quantity and quality of agricultural produce and in turn, increase farmers’ income and uplifts the lives of local communities. To date we have,

  • Benefited 5,000 local farmers every year with our earthworm biotechnology.
  • Completed soil improvement for an area of more than 1,600 acres.

Earthworms are the centre of the biotechnology for this social enterprise.
