The Culture Art and Nature
Many rural communities and small towns face challenges from rapid growth at metropolitan edges, declining rural populations, and loss of farms and working lands in Taiwan. THE CAN - Culture, Art & Nature was established in 2010 to be a community-focused business that supports and builds the economic vitality of local communities.
We want to holistically improve the quality of life in a locality through ecological, cultural, political, and institutional efforts; we care about various issues, such humanity and culture, land environment, industrial innovation, underprivileged groups and disadvantaged children. A decade on and we continue building an ever-flourishing community support system!

The work we do
We began the “Community Cultivation Projects” to help local fading industries create development opportunities for traditional crafts through design. We support local communities by purchasing food from local restaurants and working with local supply chain and farmers to attract more youths to return home to engage in the public affairs of their community and expand social influence.
In addition, we have invested resources to construct a caring system – partnering with companies to help disadvantaged students, providing mentorship to children as they grow up, and opening stores that offer occupational training for the community’s underprivileged groups.
Combining our expertise in culture, design and historic preservation, our hope is that the future generations will carry forward this knowledge and contribute their efforts to help these underprivileged groups.
THE CAN and our partners invest part of our net income towards the community development of disadvantaged children, innovative development of industries, environmental education about the land, as well as balanced urban and rural development and construction of artistic and cultural platforms. Ultimately, THE CAN seeks to enable the dreams of those in need so they can have the power to change the future.
Our beneficiaries are local businesses that are fading due to the rapid growth in metropolitan areas and declining rural populations as well as underprivileged children living in these areas.
To date we have,
- Revived businesses of more than 20 local farmers and generated over SGD 350,000 in revenues using only local produce in 2020 alone.
- Benefitted over 200 underprivileged children, whom they worked with for more than 15 years, across 17 junior high and secondary schools through their signature community accompaniment program.
How we partner with DBS Foundation
The DBS Foundation Social Enterprise Grant will allow us to scale up our impact in other rural areas, beyond Sanxia Township, accelerating the formation of alliances across rural communities.Get to know Culture Art and Nature better!
