SINGAPORE, December 31, 2004 - DBS Bank said as of yesterday night, more than 12,200 customers donated over S$1.8 million to the Singapore Red Cross' Tidal Waves Asia via DBS/POSB ATMs and DBS Internet Banking (iBanking) since Tuesday, December 28.
DBS announced on Tuesday that it made available its self-service banking channels for donations from the public to the Tidal Waves Asia fund.
As at yesterday night, the Bank received a total of S$1,843,575.80. This is more than double the S$727,740.27 raised on the second day.
"Once again, we witness the compassion and generosity of Singaporeans in a time of crisis. We are bowled over by the fact that our customers gave so much within so short a time. We are confident that the amount will cross the S$2 million
dollar mark by today," said Mr Rajan Raju, Managing Director and Head of South and South East Asia, DBS Bank.
To help the Singapore Red Cross raise more funds, the Bank sent out 370,000 electronic direct mailers to its customers from yesterday noon. Following this, the Bank saw a spike in its iBanking transaction volume.
Eighty-two per cent of the customers donated online to the Tidal Waves Asia fund, contributing S$1,446,920.83. Most customers donated S$500 and above. The single largest donation is S$20,000 and another two individuals donated $10,000 each.
Any customer wishing to make a contribution to the fund can still do so by debiting their DBS or POSB account via ATMs or iBanking. The step-by-step guide is in the Appendix.
DBS Bank donated S$100,000 to the Singapore Red Cross' Tidal Waves Asia fund, and its subsidiary, PT Bank DBS Indonesia contributed another S$100,000 (about IDR 560 million) to the National Natural Disaster in Aceh and North Sumatra fund set up by Bank Indonesia in aid of the local relief work.
