Public can also donate to Singapore Red Cross via DBS iBanking and DBS ATMs

SINGAPORE, December 28, 2004 - DBS Bank today announced that it is donating S$200,000 to help the victims of the killer tsunami that devastated coastal areas across South and South-east Asia. The Bank is also making available its self-service banking channels for donations from the public.

DBS Bank is donating S$100,000 to the Singapore Red Cross' Tidal Waves Asia fund, and its subsidiary, PT Bank DBS Indonesia is contributing another S$100,000 (about IDR 560 million) to the National Natural Disaster in Aceh and North Sumatra fund set up by Bank Indonesia in aid of the local relief work.

Mr Rajan Raju, Managing Director and Head of South and South East Asia, DBS Bank said: "We are shocked and saddened by the massive destruction caused by the tsunami in the region. DBS has operations in the region affected by the killer waves. As a member of these communities, we want to contribute to the humanitarian efforts of the relief agencies. We also hope that other organisations will be encouraged to come forward to do their part as well."

In addition, with effect from today, DBS and POSB customers can contribute to the "Red Cross Tidal Waves Asia" fund at any of the 780 DBS/POSB ATMs located islandwide. Starting tomorrow, DBS internet banking (DBS iBanking) customers will also be able to donate to the fund.

The Red Cross Tidal Waves Asia fund has been included as a billing organisation under the Bill Payment service and any customer wishing to make a contribution to the fund can do so by debiting their DBS or POSB account. The step-by-step guide is in the Appendix.

"Almost every Singaporean currently has an account with either DBS or POSB and more than 550,000 of them use DBS iBanking. Given our wide customer base and ATM network, we want to help the Singapore Red Cross raise money by making it convenient for customers to donate to this worthy cause. All funds donated to the Red Cross Tidal Waves Asia fund will be available to the Singapore Red Cross immediately," added Mr Raju.

This is not the first time that DBS opened its self-service banking channels for a charitable cause. During the SARS outbreak last year, DBS also made available its Internet Banking and Internet Kiosks to customers who wished to contribute to The Courage Fund, which was set up to support the healthcare professionals and SARS victims.
